Earth Day: Small but Mindful Celebrations

Events coordinator Emily Nichols and her husband have a special Earth Day tradition: “We get on our lawn mower and wagon with trash bags and work gloves, and pick up the litter along the sides of our two-mile street. Last year, we filled 10 bags of trash and recycling!”

Happy Earth Day! It somehow seems appropriate that this holiday would fall during a time when many of us are in a heightened state of awareness of the natural world around us, spending time outdoors and observing nature in ways and at times we normally wouldn’t be. And while we won’t be attending any large celebratory gatherings on this monumental 50th anniversary, there are still plenty of opportunities to observe the day in small but meaningful ways.

Our staff took some time today to be outdoors and mindfully breathe in our planet’s beauty with some acts of earthy love. Click on our gallery below to see how the BWD staff is celebrating this holiday.

How are YOU are celebrating Earth Day? We’d love to know! Leave a comment below.

Assistant editor Jessica Melfi and her daughter Sofia prepared hummingbird nectar and then filled up the feeder and put it out for the season. Now to sit back and watch for hummers!

Sales director Kelly Ball spent some quality time in her yard fighting the good fight: "I’ve been pulling dandelions like a woman possessed. I’ve lived at my house since 2007 and have never used ANY chemicals on my lawn, so this is something I need to keep up with on a regular basis. I have a small front yard and modest backyard (a portion that I leave grass-free to attract sparrows and thrushes), yet the effort required to maintain a dandelion-free yard is relentless!"

Production director Bruce Wunderlich says, "My wife and I planted wildflower seeds in our backyard on my lunch break to celebrate Earth Day. We hope these wildflowers will attract even more birds to our backyard."
